Accessibility statement

VALORDB serves veterans, their families, and the representatives who help them — a community that includes people with visual, motor, cognitive, and hearing disabilities. We treat accessibility as a core obligation, not an afterthought.

Our commitment

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, and where practical 2.2, at Level AA, and to the standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. These guide how we build and review every page.

What we've built in

Semantic structure & landmarks — headings in order, header, main, nav, and footer regions, and a single page language.
Keyboard access — interactive controls are reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline on every focusable element.
Labels & names — form fields, search inputs, and icon-only buttons carry text or aria-label names for screen readers.
Charts have a non-visual path — every chart canvas exposes a descriptive role="img" label, and the analytics breakdowns are also presented as a real, sortable data table and an exportable CSV, so the information never lives only inside a picture.
Plain-language option — a Veteran mode across the readers and AI explains the law in everyday language, alongside the exact verbatim text.
Color & contrast — a light and a dark theme, and we avoid conveying meaning by color alone.
Responsive & zoom-friendly — layouts reflow on small screens and tolerate text resizing.

Known limitations

We are candid about where we are still improving:

The analytics dashboard and the Title 38 reader are dense, data-rich tools; some advanced interactions are easier on a larger screen.
Interactive charts are supplemented by data tables and labels, but a screen-reader user gets the fullest experience from the table view, not the chart itself.
Some primary-source documents we link to are hosted by government sites whose accessibility we do not control.
